Megumi Masaki performs FERROVIA (2012) by Brent Lee and Sigi Torinus

Brent Lee: “Ferrovia (2012) for piano, interactive electronics and interactive video is a ten-minute work that grew from an ongoing collaboration between pianist Megumi Masaki, video artist Sigi Torinus, and composer Brent Lee. Created largely during a residency at the Casalmaggiore International Music Festival in Italy, Ferrovia incorporates field recordings of trains and train stations, and uses the ideas of distance and parallel or nearly parallel lines as points of departure for its melodic, harmonic, and visual gestures. Ferrovia is one of a series of pieces that explore the potential relationships between sound and image on a conceptual, intuitive, and technological level. In this work, correspondences are found not only in the subject matter of the source material but also on a more abstract level, such as in the way that the passing of time is measured and marked or through the various ways that the aural and visual gestures create a sense of nostalgia. The work was commissioned by Megumi Masaki with the generous assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts.”
